PRECIOUS METALS IN JEWELRY

At Mark Schneider Design, our jewelers are trained to work in a variety of metals to create extraordinary, one of a kind, heirloom quality designer jewelry  for you.  We adhere to all Federal Trade Commission rules governing the fineness and quality of the metals used. It is important to understand the differences between the precious metals offered and their individual characteristics. We work with the following metals:

PLATINUM

Platinum is a naturally white metal which will not fade or change color with time and hence will not cast any color into the stones it is holding. We use 95% pure platinum, which makes it the most precious and desirable metal we use. Because platinum is used pure, it is hypoallergenic and thus ideal for those with sensitive skin. Platinum is durable and dense and stays in position once cast into jewelry, which makes it the best metal to set precious stones in, especially your center diamond in your engagement ring. During routine buffing and polishing, no metal is ever lost onto the buffer.  Platinum is 30 times as rare as gold and enjoys a coveted history as the favored metal for influential individuals.

GOLD

Gold is as valuable now as it has been since the dawn of civilization. The many extraordinary properties of gold make it perfect for forming precious jewelry, such as engagement rings. Gold is malleable and in its softened state it can be hammered into very thin wafers or stretched into long thin wires. Gold is resistant to corrosion and bacteria and hence healthy to wear. At Schneider’s, we use 18 karat (75% pure gold) and 14 karat (58% gold) in its yellow and white form. We embody and support the principles of the World Gold Council and use recycled, “green” gold in all our jewelry, making our jewelry environmentally friendly.  With gold at an all time high, investment in gold jewelry is an added bonus.
